The Canadian Armed Forces has responded to questions raised about the flag draped over the casket of the unknown soldier.

The use of the maple leaf was perceived as inaccurate to some due to the fact that WWI was before Confederation, meaning the soldier fought and died a Newfoundlander.

The Canadian Armed Forces says members are only permitted to carry a casket with the Canadian flag.

The Armed Forces also recognizes any missing Newfoundland soldiers as Canadians after 1949.
